The nitty gritty

How soon did you move to LA after graduation?

I moved about 15 months after graduation.

Did you know anyone in LA?

I knew my uncle, my cousin, a couple friends from high school and journalism contact.

Where did you first stay? How long?

I first stayed at my former roommate’s old place before we moved into our own place, I crashed there for a couple days.

Where did you first live?

I first lived in a two-bedroom apartment in North Hollywood.

What types of jobs did you initially take when you first moved to LA?

Part-time newspaper sports writing jobs and a full-time job with a captioning service.

How do you feel about internships (free, paid, etc)?

I feel they’re good for experience, but they’re also not as important as they’re made out to be.

Did you ever intern in LA? 

I did not.

What led to your current job?

I applied for a two-month contract position for Yahoo Sports’ Olympic coverage, which led to a job with the Front Page team and eventually a job with the Yahoo Sports team.

How did you meet people/make friends?

Through the Penn State Alumni Association, through my jobs and through social activities (kickball league, etc.).

What advice would you give to someone moving to LA?

Have a good idea of what field you want to be working in, and strike up relationships with as many people as you can.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in your industry?

Be flexible, approach your job with enthusiasm and embrace the fact you’ll likely have to work for crappy pay before you get where you want to be.
